What is Carpet Stretching?

As anyone with carpet in their home will probably tell you, carpet is a timeless flooring option that provides comfort and style to any room in the house. Like with most things, though, time can take its toll on carpet in a number of ways. Thankfully, there’s a way to restore your carpet to its original condition that goes beyond cleaning and doesn’t involve paying to replace it all. This process is known as carpet stretching.

Carpet stretching? What does that mean?

This may be a phrase that many people haven’t heard, but it’s actually really quite simple. Carpet stretching is a process that involves pulling the carpeting tighter and re-securing it to the tack or anchor strips located along the perimeter of the room in the sub-flooring. Easy, right?

Ok, simple enough. But why would I need that?

Over time, your carpet goes through a great deal of wear and tear in a number of different ways, a few of which that go a little bit deeper than the surface.

  • Heavy foot traffic: Even though carpets were meant to be walked all over, this can eventually wear down even the best and toughest carpets.

  • Moving furniture: Though you may not notice it right way, dragging heavy furniture across carpet enough times can result in rippling and loosening at the edges.

  • Wrong padding: In the case of choosing the right carpet for your home, there’s always more than just meets the eye. While it is important to pick a carpet that is visually appealing, taking the time to choose a padding that adequately compliments it is just as important. An incorrect carpet and padding combo can result in the same rippling and loosening that we talked about before.

  • Poor installation: If your carpet was not properly installed, this could mean that it was not stretched and/or properly secured in the first place.

This wear and tear can take shape in a number of different ways. Have you ever noticed your carpet bunching up or bubbling up in certain places around the room? Has your carpet started coming up in doorways and where it meets wood or tile floors? Then it may be time for a professional carpet stretching! Much like carpet cleaning, time is of the essence. Acting fast is essential for detering further damage. The longer you wait, the worse it may become. The worse it becomes, the harder (and more expensive) it will be to correct!
